C'mon AWL, everyone knows an LC200 will whip a puny 70 series tojo all day long mate. Get with the program
While I'm sure that you jest, Pete, anyone with an IQ above 27 would understand that although a stupid little turbocharged, overstressed, high revving V6 engine may make more power in the short term, there is
no way known that it will have the longevity of the old slow-revving, understressed little V8 that is in the 79.
Just a simple tune saw mine achieve 200kw and 650nm torque, with torque from 1200-3000rpm.
More later…much more!
OK, here we go. Toyota, in their infinite wisdom, saw fit to continue with the stupidly short wheelbase of 2850mm while the 79 series has 3180mm, a massive 330mm more.
Toyota has reduced both GVM and GCM for this car from the 200 series' figures, while tare has dropped only 45kg.
Tare weight of a 79 series is almost 500kg LESS too.
Rear overhang on a 300 series is 1210mm before towbar fitment, which would add at least 200mm.
The much-adored, almost obligatory, WDH would add even more rear overhang of, but we'll stick with, say, 1400mm.
This means that a towball weight of 350kg (10% of 3500kg van weight) would add over 170kg EXTRA (520kg total) to the rear axle weight, which strangely has a lower rating than has the LC200's rear axle.
This weight comes OFF the car's front axle and can NEVER be replaced without increasing GTM of van, as well as creating various other problems, not to mention the increased yaw involved.
Seems that there is a GVM upgrade available to 4200kg that gives a 2400kg rear axle capacity.
There is NO WAY KNOWN that this GVM figure will EVER be reached when towing a PIG trailer, and I doubt that said figure could even be reached as a touring vehicle.
The 79 has 2300kg rear axle capacity ex-factory, and I run at 3650kg GVM, legal everywhere, with 130kg to spare.
Somewhere I read that the GCM of the subject vehicle had been increased by 1500kg?
If so, the GCM now would be 8250kg, an increase of well over 20% on factory figures.
These over-stressed little engines are known for overheating problems, so it is little wonder that it cried "Enough" when asked to carry 22% more. Spare me! What do these clowns expect Toyota to do?
Personally, I hope that Toyota doesn't bow to these idiots bleating on social media, rather suggesting that they join the Far Queue.
Regarding factory oil recommendations of 0W20, this makes no sense to me, particularly in Northern Australia where temps regularly are in the 40s. But I'm not a Toyota Engineer.
Running 5W40 full synthetic (Penrite HPR5) in my little understressed V8 I've never even looked like having over-heating problems despite running at 6800kg, legal on all axles too.
There is NO WAY KNOWN that, loaded for travel, that car would be legal on the rear axle, even if the axle has indeed been upgraded to 2400kg.
These clowns would have been better served by buying a Ram 2500 or a Silverado 2500, or F250 or similar rather than trying to make this over-rated little car do waaaay more than it ever was designed for. Very sad for them. BooHoo.
My heart bleeds. So Sad, Poor Lad.
There is so much more that I could write, but I've run out of motivation!
This post may at least have answered a few questions, but I'm happy to elaborate if asked. Cheers
