The current version of Wiki Camps (5.0.73a - 28th July 23) is a total disaster. It appears someone without an adequate (any?) understanding of multi tasking operating systems wrote the last update: the application freezes frequently and for tens of seconds whilst it waits for requested data from its network connection and as the Wiki Camps server is very slow this process can take a long time.
A partial solution is to put your phone/tablet into "Aircraft" mode *before* you start Wiki Camps of course this means the app. cannot obtain data about new camps but, in its current state, it probably isn't doing that anyway. In aircraft mode you will be able to browse locally stored camps without the delays.
When you find a camp you're interested in quit the app, turn off aircraft mode, restart the app. and open the camp(s) of interest; Wiki Camps will now download fresh data for that particular camp.
It's a tiresome cludge but until WC employ someone who can programme with competence it's all we've got.

Is it possible that since being purchased by a caravan association, that it is a ploy to remove any free camping assistance?

They maintain this is not the case, but can you imagine the pressure G'Day would be getting from their member parks to do just that. When the Caravan Parks Industry Association has created a document with the specific goal of helping its members close such free camps, I can imagine there would be pressure from that association as well.
Nevertheless (for now at least) I am giving Wikicamps the benefit of doubt and put it down to incompetence rather than a goal. Various reports suggest it seems to be improving.

Yes it would be. Of course that means not connected to wifi either.
I can't speak for the success of that method because I have not used Wikicamps on my phone since this saga began.

Wikicamps have released a couple of updates, including an Android one today, but they have really just pushed the problem around rather than solving it.
I do wonder if they know what they are doing with the code; there was a buyout of WC which may have resulted in changes to the software engineers and although this code should not be particularly complex that does depend upon how well it was written and documented. Also if they have involved contract developers in India then all bets are off! I have some *absolute horror* tales of some Indian companies.

I opened it up today, on an Android Tablet, and apart from the sign saying that an update was available, it kept crashing
After applying the 63 MB update, it seemed to have settled down a bit

My understanding of technology is Zero, but when I was having trouble with Wikicamps I simply deleted the app and then again downloaded it. No more problems.

Are you sure? They have improved the app. user interface such that the multitasking now works and there are no two minute delays waiting for keystrokes but the site updating and database management is still beyond dismal. I did a "sync" on just Victoria yesterday and it too over 30 minutes to put 32 updates into the database - at that point I gave up, closed the app. re-opened it and it said the last sync was five days ago ie. before I started the 30 attempt. This morning I opened the app. and it informed the last sync was 22 hours ago ie. the 30 minute fiasco of yesterday but I really have no idea whether my database is up to date or not. I am, of course, running the latest version of the app. Try doing a "Sync" on all states and watch what happens.

I have managed to avoid using it, hoping that it will be properly fixed by the time I really want it. So I have limited first hand experience.
But reading elsewhere, there are comments of success by totally deleting the app, not just updating. This will have the effect of clearing the cache and that may be what continues to cause problems for some. Maybe, maybe not. There are reports that even this does not solve things for some users, and Wikicamps has been asking for the detail of what device they are using.
So it could be that the problems remaining are only on some devices or maybe versions of the OS. Hopefully 100% resolved soon.
