My partner proposed a weekend in the Hunter Valley in 2 weeks with the focus being the Hunter Valley Wine and Beer Festival.
Am I an exception who does not like the idea of paying $17 per entry ticket, or $25 on the day (includes wine glass .. presumably plastic). For that you get:
- to stand in queues for 30ml of wine at $4 each to drink out of my new glass (or $10 for a glass of wine)
- nowhere/limited opportunities to sit
- overpriced takeway food
- may need to to eat standing up, holding a paper plate of food in one hand, using disposable cutlery while juggling a glass of wine in the other
- "music" from the live entertainment
What am I missing? There are free venues where you can sit and enjoy music from a performer in comfort. Save the $17/25 entry fee and put it towards better food.

I'm with you AWL.
It seems to me that, mainly, "Festivals" are simply a money making scheme; the organisers get to charge the exhibitors a fee to show their wares and also charge the people who attend - a win/win situation.
The exhibitors try to recoup their expense by ripping off the public who are silly enough to purchase their "boutique" products.
I am reminded of a quotation from the inimitable Oscar Wilde talking about the "sport" of fox hunting: " The unspeakable in full pursuit of the uneatable."

Personally, I could never see the point. Huge crowds, living in a tent, pissing down with rain at any time, over amplified noise (not music, music is a different thing altogether) Give me a theatre anytime, nice comfortable seat and a first class act and I am happy. Over the years I have played double bass with some of the worlds greatest musso's. James Last, Max Greger and Billy Vaughan just to mention a few. Yep, I put a CD on and play along with them. At my time of life I no longer have the urge to travel to gigs like I used to but still keep my hand in! Been known to get a tune out of the Yamaha keyboard now and again.
Festivals? not for this little black duck but, whatever floats your boat I guess. The younguns seem to enjoy it.

I find that the music festivals, which cater for the older generation, are OK
Plus (for me), it is a bonus if it is a country western music festival As then you get both types of music, country and western
On a serious note, I normally go to the type of music festival, where you park your RV on an unpowered site (farmers field/oval/etc), and walk to the venue
There is such a festival coming up in Cervantes in November 2023 Three nights camping on the oval = $60 each vehicle Weekend pass to the festival = $70 each person Total for 2 people = $200 plus a couple of dollars booking fee
It is about 370 kilometres from my home base, so virtually just up the road, for me
I did read (many years ago), that listening to music you like, makes you happy I have no idea if this is actually true, as I always try to look on the bright side

Went to the Cervantes musical festival, and it was good
(If it was bad, I would have said so)
It was held inside the local basketball shed, probably the largest building, in the area
Beautiful green grass of the oval, was our parking bay
If it is on again next year, I will certainly go again
