I read that a man fell into a river near Cooktown, and was taken by a crocodile. Now the "authorities" have killed the crocodile. Spare me. Why? The crocodile was simply doing what crocodiles do, and the dipstick who fell into the river deserves exactly what he got. Despite the much over-dramatised press reports about "saving his wife" etc it seems that this "unfortunate individual" simply fell into a river and was eaten by a crocodile. Big deal, but certainly not the crocodile's fault, surely?

I do know the area, I lived there, the bank is on a very sharp bend and is a silt type material that breaks off easily when dry. A trap for any one. As for killing the crock, they are in plague proportions, haven’t been hunted and arn’t cautious around humans. There needs to be a bit of culling, they are not endangered.

I guess, and it is a guess, the reason they kill it is to retrieve human remains in order to establish a person's death was indeed due to the croc and not from some other event.

Yes, I must admit that I hadn't considered that possibility, and agree that it would be reasonable thing to do. And thanks to Rod for sharing his knowledge of the area where this incident occurred. I agree that crocodiles are in plague proportions, with little fear of humans, perhaps because of the people who insist on feeding these predators, despite warnings not to do so.

Bit of a yarn about the area. There is an ocean ski event from Cairns to Cooktown, one year a competitor mistook the Annan river for the Endeavour river and towed his skier up the river, upon realising his error the only way to turn around was to drop the skier (the ski ropes are very long), poor skier had to wait in the crock infested river for the boat to turn and bring the rope back to them to start again. The river is usually a bit murky, garantee it was very murky after. When the skiers do finally reach Cooktown they have to be dropped next to boats as the Endeavour is full of crocks too. The skiers legs are so weak at the end of the race they usually can’t walk.

Not only are they in plague proportions but are getting bigger and more aggressive every year.

I'd like to see a massive crocodile cull. They will never become endangered, no matter how many are killed.
