When I set up this forum I had to decide whether boards and posts would be visible to anyone on the internet or just to registered members: I chose the latter, for no good reason really but I had to make a choice.
It is likely that with posts being private Google has been unable to search them and thus provide details of this forum in its search results which, in turn, may be a factor in the low level of membership we have seen.
What I propose is to change the forum setting which keeps post views restricted to members only and instead allows posts to be viewed by anyone on the internet who visits this forum's website. NB. In order to create new threads or comment upon existing ones people will still need to be members of this board and thus approved by me - visitors may only view.
I can effect this change on individual boards so, for example, "General" could be made public and all other boards remain restricted to members or all boards could be made public or anything in-between.
NOTE WELL: if this change occurs all your posts to date, on the given board(s) will instantly become public property - if there is anything you would like me to remove let me know - you are able to edit and delete from your own posts also.
I'll not make this change unless the majority support it - please let me know your thoughts, preferably in this thread but a PM is also fine.

I have no objection to you making the forum public Mike, your forum your decision.

I don't think I have posted anything too contentious, so OK by me.
However, we should all be careful not to be too outspoken on some subjects. I remember well how some university students went through legal hell for making some comments on Facebook that appeared trivial to me.
The Liberals tried to get legislation changed, using this case as an example, but it was blocked by Labor and Greens.

My current thinking is to make "General", "Technical" and any future boards which directly relate to camping/nomad/travel matters public and leave the other boards private.
It seems to me it's the topics on those boards we wish Google to find rather than recipes or debates.

Hi Mike, the above proposal seems to be a good compromise between keeping everything "private" and having a "free for all" situation. This will enable potential members to get a feel for the forum, and encourage them to join if they have any real interest in participating. Good luck, but we must all make efforts to encourage new members to join. Cheers

Job done.
The consensus seems clear so "General" and "Technical" are now public boards and you should be able to read them (read only) without logging in. In my experience it will take the search engines two or three weeks to find them.
Thanks everyone for your responses.

Thanks for that NH.
I'm not sure what to make of it; no forum is going to allow anonymous logins but three boards are public so they can crawl those.
It used to be easy to get Google to find your website but seems considerably more difficult now.

I don't know how it works, or worked, but I was able to see Google's cached version of some forum threads (in another forum) where normal access was barred unless you were logged in. I guess there is some way to allow access to the Googlebot but not the general public. In fact in some forums you can see which search bot is crawling the forum at that particular time because it appears in the list of registered users.
Edit:
I just checked one forum.
Bing [Bot], Google [Bot], Majestic-12 [Bot] are 3 of the registered users that are watching that forum right now.
